Description: 

English Language and Literature Programs are offered in four speclialisations:

  • Translation Program
  • English for Business and Tourism Program
  • Teaching English as a Foreign Language
  • general specialisation (free choice of all available courses, with no specific professional profile)

 

Full-time programs involve 15 weeks of regular classes per semester. Classes are held Monday – Friday, between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. Students sign up online for courses in September choosing time and day of classes, specialization courses, form of some courses (online or face-to-face) etc.

English Language and Literature Studies

Bachelor studies (1st cycle), full time;

Modes: Language continued (from B1 level of English) or Language beginner (from A1 level of English)

The program core courses focus on practical English language skills within receptive skills - listening and reading comprehension and productive skills such as speaking and writing up to the level C1 CEFR. Students are equipped with practical language skills by means of various activating teaching methods applied during classed supported by rich online resources. Moreover, the students are provided with broad knowledge of English language and literature against a wider intercultural and interdisciplinary perspective. The study program includes components of literature, linguistics, culture, history, communication etc. with and a wide range of elective modules: foreign language teaching, language for business and  tourism, translation and “language +language”. Responding to students’ needs, the Philological School of Higher Education offers  flexible programs with a number of elective courses and various course combinations. To the advantage of both international and Polish students, in the Language continued program the majority of courses are taught entirely in English whereas for the Language beginner program no previous command of English is needed but a strong command of Polish is required (initially some academic courses are held in English and in Polish). Courses are delivered by highly qualified international academics supported by state-of-the-art teaching aids and solutions – mainly Moodle e-learning platform resources including the rich offer of alternative online courses and study materials.

A graduate of this program has a fluent command of English in speech and writing, including professional vocabulary and structures at level C1 CEFR and possesses a comprehensive knowledge in general humanities, a comprehensive knowledge of historical, cultural and literary issues of English-speaking countries. Graduation ensures thorough educational knowledge in the field of linguistics as well as the ability to resolve vocational dilemmas and to transfer information and skills to other fields of study. The acquired knowledge and skills may be successfully applied in a graduate's future career with respect to ethical principles.

A graduate of Teaching English as a Foreign Language module (TEFL), stage I-II (pre-school and primary school):
- possesses adequate education in the field of English methodology;
- obtains appropriate preparation for English teaching within major specialisation;
- is familiar with a wide range of stimulating activities supporting a teaching and educational process;- is capable of performing duties of care and education.

Completing English for Business and Tourism module ensures acquisition of the following skills and knowledge:

- communication in business environment;
- increasing linguistic competence individually, especially in the area of specialist language;
- outline of macro- and microeconomics;
- conducting meetings, presentations, business correspondence;
- initiating and keeping co-operation with EU institutions.

Completing Translation module ensures acquisition of professional translation skills in English-Polish and Polish-English translation. In the framework of specialist courses main emphasis is on:
- developing and mastering practical English language skills;
- adequate education in the field of theory of translation;
- raising competence in the area of specialist language;
- improving techniques and strategies applied in written and oral translation.

Completing additionally the Minor Language module („Language + Language”) ensures acquisition of a thorough knowledge of the second language with an extended component of historical, cultural and literary topics. The minor language may be German, Spanish or Italian, depending on the number of candidates.

Future career

The acquired skills and knowledge enable graduates to work in international companies, educational sector (schools, cultural institutions etc.), in the tourist industry, in publishing and mass-media companies, local, state and EU administrative institutions, as an English culture promoter in cultural institutions, or as a translator.
