Prof. Jacek Popiel becomes new Rector of the Jagiellonian University

On 1 September 2020 Professor Jacek Popiel, until recently the JU Vice-Rector for Human Resources and Finance Management, assumed office of the Rector of the Jagiellonian University. He took over the position from Prof. Wojciech Nowak, who led the oldest Polish University from 2012 to 2020. JU Vice-Rectors and Deans for the term 2020-2024 also took office during the ceremony at JU Collegium Maius.

Prof. Jacek Popiel is the 306th Rector of the Jagiellonian University. On 12 May 2020 he was elected for a four-year term by the electoral college consisting of 227 people, representing all members of the JU academic community. He served the University as the JU Vice-Rector for Human Resources and Financial Management for the last eight years. His previous positions include the Dean of the JU Faculty of Polish Studies and the Rector and Vice-Rector of the Ludwik Solski State Drama School (the current AST National Academy of Theatre Arts in Kraków).

As the Vice-Rector for Human Resources and Financial Management, Prof. Jacek Popiel was succeeded by Prof. Piotr Kuśtrowski, who used to be the Dean of Faculty of Chemistry, whereas the office of the Vice-Rector for University Development was assumed by Prof. Jarosław Górniak, who served as the Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy from 2012 to 2020. Prof. Dorota Malec, who was the Rector for University Development in the previous term, assumed the newly created office of the Vice-Rector for International Relations.
