Description:

Students of Mathematics obtain a basic knowledge of mathematics and its applications. The main topics considered during the studies are: analysis, algebra, analytic geometry, logic (including sentential and quantifier calculus), ordinary differential equations, probability theory, statistics, complex numbers and analytic functions. The students gain an ability for logical argumentation, and to carry out proofs of mathematical theorems, in particular to distinguish between assumptions and conclusions, to perform complicated calculations and formulate problems in mathematical language for their easier solving, to extract qualitative information from numerical data, use IT tools during the analysis of application problems, and to further develop independent mathematical knowledge.

MATHEMATICS GRADUATES:

  • can progress to MA programmes (e.g. in Informatics, Mathematics)
  • get a degree which equips them with a variety of transferable skills that are highly attractive to employers

WORK PLACEMENTS:

  • students undertake compulsory practice to enhance their professional experience. Work placements are co-organized with the private sector partners cooperating with the Lublin City Office in the field of IT solutions
  • KUL’s Careers Centre provides a range of help and advice to help you plan your career and make well-informed decisions along the way, even after you graduate

SKILLS ECQUIRED BY MATHEMATICS GRADUATES:

  • graduates specialising in informatics gains an extensive knowledge of computer science, programming in languages C++ and Java, creation of web pages and databases, as well as of rules for administration and data protection in computer networks. Such a graduate may be employed in companies in the field of informatics and computer programming, as administrator of computer networks or web pages, and in telecommunication companies
  • specialising in data analysis and financial mathematics knows practical applications of mathematics including statistics, in particular mathematical models of real world systems, elements of financial mathematics, foundations of insurance mathematics, Markov chains, difference schemes and variational calculus, and algorithmic methods used in applied mathematics. The graduates of this specialisation may be employed in banks and other financial institutions, statistical offices, insurance companies, as well as departments of survey, research and development, management, planning and production control, accounting and market analysis in trade, industry, or transport companies
  • students gain a command of a foreign language, and know the specialist terminology of mathematics to be prepared for working in institutions using mathematical methods and IT tools

SKILLS FOR SELF-EMPLOYMENT:

  • our graduates are qualified to act as self-employed specialists; they understand the general, legal and formal requirements for self-employment and possess skills for developing a small-size IT company
